Description of Agency:

The Youngstown Area Community Action Council (YACAC) is a non-profit agency administering eleven programs: Head Start Program, Early Start Program , Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC), Home Energy Services Program Food Service Program on, Home Energy Assistance Program, Senior Services Outreach Program, Dial A Ride Transportation Services , Emergency Homeless Program and Life Skills Development Program.

 
Service Area:
The agency serves all of Mahoning County.
 
Services Provided:

Head Start:
Comprehensive preschool program providing services to children ages 3-5 and their families. Services include a safe, secure learning environment emphasizing kindergarten preparation, literacy development and the development of social skills. Children attend a half day session and receive two nutritious meals. Services include education, nutrition, health, transportation, social, disabilities and parent involvement.

In addition, Head Start provides year round, all day child care services for parents who are working or going to school.

Early Start Program:
Comprehensive childcare services for children 0-3 and pregnant Women.

Women, Infants & Children Program (WIC)
Federally funded nutrition program that provides nutrition education and supplemental food for women, infants and children who are determined to be a nutritional risk.

Home Energy Services Program:
Provision of a variety of energy conservation services include inspections of heating appliances and insulation of the home. Energy education with the homeowner or renter on conservation measures

Food Services Program:
Preparation of hot meals daily for Head Start and After School Programs.

Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP):
Emergency HEAP provides assistance to low income households that have had a utility service terminated, face the threat of disconnection or may have less than a 10-day supply of bulk fuel.

Senior Services Outreach Program:
Senior Services Program deals with the multi-faceted problems of the elderly population in Mahoning County. Energy, food and clothing assistance is provided through referrals to various social service providers. Mass outreach efforts address specific issues facing the elderly population.

Dial A Ride Transportation Services:
Offers free transportation to all eligible customers residing in the Mahoning County area. Transportation is provided for elderly, physically challenged and low-income residents, with priority given to the elderly. Trips are provided to all medical appointments, social service appointments and limited grocery shopping for the elderly and or physically challenged. Request must be made 48 hours in advance.

Family & Community Services:
Serves as a link between a number of Social Services Agencies in the community, coordinates all possible resources to provide a seamless system which offers support services, referrals, and ongoing case management.

Direct services are provided by way of the following programs:

Emergency Homeless Program:
This service helps individuals and families during crisis situations that have caused them to become homeless or pending homelessness. Services offered are a.) payment for 1st month's rent and/or security deposit 2)purchase of used appliances and furniture 3) food vouchers.

Life Skills Development Program:
An intensive case management program for homeless, chemically dependent women and their children. The program provides employment training, drug and alcohol counseling and assistance with housing, food, furniture and utilities.

Western Action Council (WAC)
Provides a variety of services to western Mahoning County residents that include but are not limited to transportation, referrals for HEAP, Head Start, Home Energy, Seniors, Nutritional and Health Services. WAC also provides other social services agencies office space to service the needs of area residents. Those programs include, WIC, Mahoning County Jobs and Familiy Services, Retired Seniors Volunteer Program, Mahoning County Health Department and the Sebring Unit of the Salvation Army.
